Last week, Ministers adopted the conclusions on the Competitiveness Council. Meanwhile, the Council adopted the ESPR, NZIA and R2R Directive.

Competitiveness Council Conclusions: On 24 May, Ministers adopted the conclusions on the Competitiveness Council. Conclusions on the Single Market were also adopted. Use of carbon in the chemical Industry: On 24 May, during the Competitiveness Council, Roland Lescure, the French Minister for Industry, presented an initiative on a ‘European Sustainable Carbon Policy Package’. PFAS: On 27 May, ten members of the PAN Europe network published a report on the presence of trifluoroacetic acid, a product of PFAS, in groundwater and surface water samples. PFAS in France: On 30 May, the French Senate passed the PFAS Green Bill proposal. PFAS in Denmark: Denmark’s Ministry of the Environment has announced plans to ban PFAS in clothing, shoes and waterproofing agents intended for consumers from 1 July 2026. Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR): On 27 May, the Council adopted the new ESPR. Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA): On 28 May, the Council adopted the Net-Zero Industry Act. Right-to-repair Directive (R2R): On 30 May, the Council adopted the R2R directive. Energy Charter Treaty (ECT): On 30 May, the Council gave the final green light for the European Union’s withdrawal from the ECT. Place of climate in the Council’s strategic agenda: In an open letter dated 30 May, NGOs regret that the fact that the climate is not mentioned more in the Council’s strategic agenda. Hy2Move project: On 28 May, the European Commission approved 1.4 billion euros for the pan-European Hy2Move project. Regions and cities shaping the European Green Deal 2.0 report: On 29 May, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) published a report on the Green Deal and its funding. Plastics recycled content requirements paper: On 24 May, the OECD Environment Policy Committee published a paper on plastic recycled content requirements. Thierry Breton statement on European Funds: In a note on LinkedIn, Thierry Breton, the Commissioner for the Internal Market, stated that he wants to restrict European funds for products made outside of the EU. Survey on Attitudes of Europeans towards Environment: In May, the European Commission published the results of a survey on the attitudes of Europeans towards the environment.
