Did you know that von der Leyen released the portfolios of the Commissioners-designate?

On 18 September, Ursula von der Leyen revealed the Commissioners-designate and their assigned portfolios, giving us a glimpse of what the next European Commission mandate might look like. However, this structure is still subject to approval by the European Parliament.

For the upcoming term, the Commission has shifted to a model with no Vice-Presidents. Instead, six Executive Vice-Presidents will take on the primary responsibility for key areas:

  • Teresa Ribera Rodríguez (Spain): Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just, and Competitive Transition
  • Henna Virkkunen (Finland): Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy
  • Stéphane Séjourné (France): Executive Vice-President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy
  • Kaja Kallas (Estonia): High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Vice-President of the European Commission
  • Roxana Mînzatu (Romania): Executive Vice-President for People, Skills, and Preparedness
  • Raffaele Fitto (Italy): Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms

Jessika Roswall has been named Commissioner-designate for Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy. With her background as the Swedish Minister for European Union Affairs and Nordic Cooperation (from October 2022 to September 2024), Roswall is set to lead the development of the Circular Economy Act. This key legislative act, referenced in the political guidelines, aims to create demand for secondary materials and establish a single market for waste across Europe.

In our manifesto, FEAD has also called for a Circular Material use Act.

Furthermore, the implementation of the Clean Industrial Deal, set to be a cornerstone of the Commission’s work during the first 100 days, will be shared by Teresa Ribera and Stéphane Séjourné.

This is important as FEAD has also asked for an European Industrial Deal.

Now, we wait for the audition at the European Parliament. Stay tuned!
