Did you know that we can enhance packaging’s recyclability by introducing specific requirements for producers?

Enhancing products’ recyclability is at the very heart of a successful transition towards more circular societies. In this regard, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive deals introduces specific “essential” requirements to improve packaging recyclability. FEAD stresses the importance of proper enforcement of the latter and calls for additional criteria to be introduced, in the context of the revision of the above-mentioned legislation.

A key aspect driving better recyclability is the more sustainable design of packaging. For instance, multilayer packaging, especially if composed of different materials, poses challenges to end-of-life treatment at recycling facilities. The simple shift to monolayer packaging, coupled with the reduction of additives, colors and chemicals, could entail significant improvements in recyclability.
