EU Parliament acts against ‘fast fashion’ waste

Material Recycling World – 28 April 2023 – The European Parliament’s environment committee has voted to require textile products to be longer lasting and easier to reuse, repair and recycle. MEPs also voted this week to ban the destruction of unsold or returned textiles and for binding targets for the entire lifecycle of textiles. Both must go before the full parliament later in the summer. European waste management association FEAD backed the committee’s view, and said there should be a robust framework to create and scale up a strong recycling industry for textile waste. It said mandatory recycled content targets for textiles would increase demand for quality recycled fibres, boost end-markets for separately collected textiles and trigger further investments to scale up textile recycling.
