Last week, the voting process for the EU 2024 elections took place; it was time to decide which lucky MEPs gets to enjoy the Brussels bubble, with all of its twists and turns, for the next mandate!


Traceability of chemical products: On 31 May, 17 NGOs published a note asking the European Commission to work on a strategy for the traceability of chemicals largely based on ecodesigns standards. 

French ban on Polystyrene packaging: On 4 June, during a question/answer with the French government, Dominique Faure, the French State Secretary for Rural Affairs, announced that the French government wants to postpone the ban on polystyrene packaging until 2030. 

ETS Market stability: On 1 June, the European Commission announced that it had adopted a Communication on the total number of allowances in circulation (TNAC) on the European carbon market.

IT Platform energy-related products and SRM: A call for tenders was launched on 3 June and is open until 12 August. 

Low-carbon Hydrogen consultation: On 30 May, Stefano Grassi, the Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson’s Chief of Staff, said that the consultation on a delegated act on low-carbon hydrogen will begin before summer. 

Access to justice in environmental matters in relation to State aid decisions: The European Commission has opened two public consultations, one for a communication and the other for a future regulation on access to justice in relation to State aid decisions. 

COP28 Tripling Renewable Capacity Pledge: On 4 June, the International Energy Agency published a report on the COP28 Tripling Renewable Capacity Pledge which aims to triple Renewable Energy Capacity by 11,000 GW by 2030 and double the annual average rate of energy efficiency from 2% to over 4% by 2030. 

European Green Deal – Analysis: On 3 June, the think tank, Jacques Delors Institute, published an analysis of the European Green Deal and its future following the 2024 European elections.

Europe’s direction – article: On 4 June, Leena Ylä-Mononen, the Executive Director of the European Environment Agency, published an article in which she stated that ‘Europe’s green transition has gained momentum over the past few years, and it is indeed important to now stay the course’.

EFRAG ESRS Technical Explanations: On 30 May, EFRAG released 44 new technical explanations on the ESRS Q&A platform. 

2023 Investment in Environmental protection: According to a Eurostat article published on 5 June, in 2023, EU Member States invested 67 billion euros in environmental protection services. 

FDP Programme for European Commission: On 3 June, the German liberal party Frei Demokratische Partei (FDP) published its programme for the next European Commission.
