Good things come to those who lobby… is definitely the mantra the industry lives by. A year after the Antwerp Declaration and von der Leyen’s visit, the Commission President is back and this time, with a set of legislations (the Clean Industrial Deal, Omnibus I & II) to show companies that she has heard their cries.
Clean Industrial Deal: On 26 February, during a press conference, Commissioner Teresa Ribera presented the Clean Industrial Deal. The deal includes an Action Plan for Affordable Energy (presented by Commissioner Dan Jørgensen) to accelerate renewable energy and industrial electrification.
FEAD released a press release reacting to this Deal in which we welcome the Commission’s work but push for waste management and recycling to be made more competitive compared to virgin materials. Read it here.
Commission simplification package (Omnibus I & II): On 26 February, following their presentation of the Clean Industrial Deal, the Commission presented the simplification package for Omnibus I & II.
2040 Climate target: Contrary to what was previously reported, the 2040 climate target was not presented with the Clean Industrial Deal. According to the Commission’s work programme, the text will still be presented before the end of March.
Waste export: On 24 February, the Commission reported that it had received requests from 24 non-OECD countries to be included on the list of countries eligible to import non-hazardous waste from the EU.
Circular Economy Act – Zero Waste Europe policy recommendations: On 25 February, the NGO Zero Waste Europe published policy recommendations for the upcoming Circular Economy Act, awaited for the end of 2026.
REACH revision – CEFIC Action plan: On 24 February, CEFIC published its 10-point action plan to simplify REACH.EU carbon market & decarbonisation – WWF & Carbon Market Watch report: On 25 February, the NGOs WWF and Carbon Market Watch published a report titled ‘A Clean Industrial Revolution in Europe’ which delves into ‘how the EU carbon market can accelerate decarbonisation by making polluters pay’.
Competitiveness Council: On 12 March, the Competitiveness Council will take place. The agenda includes the Omnibus simplification package, the Competitiveness Compass and the Clean Industrial Deal.
Strategic Dialogue on Steel: In the concept note published on 25 February, the European Commission explains the objective of the upcoming Strategic Dialogue on Steel. This dialogue builds on the Clean Transition Dialogue on steel in March 2024.
Methane emission – EEA Briefing: On 27 February, the European Environment Agency published a briefing on emissions of methane.

This includes our first General Assembly of the year, as well as a guided tour of Sofia, a networking session and a visit of a a plastic recycling and/or sorting facility near Sofia.
