It seems the debate on Ursula von der Leyen’s re-election at the Parliament coincided with laundry day as several MEPs used this opportunity to air out their multiple grievances with the President of the Commission. However, MEPs finally decided to wash the laundry in-house as von der Leyen was reelected for the Presidency of the Commission after Roberta Metsola was also re-elected for the Presidency of the Parliament earlier last week.
In the United States however, it’s out with the old and in with the new, as Joe Biden is dropping out of the Presidential race and Kamala Harris, his current Vice-President, is now running in his place.
European Commission Presidency: On 18 July, Urusla von der Leyen was re-elected as President of the European Commission. She will now begin constructing her new European Commission, including the newly announced Commissioners for Fisheries and Oceans and for Housing.

European Parliament – Presidency: On 16 July, MEPs electedRoberta Metsola (EPP, Malta) as President of the European Parliament until 2027.

Plastic Pollution: On 11 July, the think tank Planet Tracker published a statement signed by 70 financial institutions. The statement calls on petrochemical companies to transition to safe and environmentally sound practices, by reducing fossil fuel dependency and eliminating hazardous chemicals.
Industrial Emissions Directive (IED): On 15 July, the IED was published in the Official Journal of the EU.
Ship recycling: On 16 July, the Commission published the 13th edition of the European list of ship recycling facilities.
Gas Package and Methane Regulation: The gas package (Regulation and directive) and methane regulation were published in the EU Official Journal on 15 July.
Shein and circularity: On 9 July, Shein, the Chinese fast fashion retailer, announced the launch of a ‘circularity’ fund in Europe and the United Kingdom, endowed with 200 million euros over five years.
RecyClass Design for Recycling Guidelines: On 16 July, the new version of the Design for Recycling Guidelines for all plastic packaging streams was published by RecyClass.
European electricity markets – policy brief: The think tank Bruegel has published a policy brief on changing dynamics of European electricity markets and the supply-demand mismatch risk.
Environmental tax revenues: According to data published on 16 July by Eurostat, environmental tax revenues are down 4% from 2021.
ACER response to ENTSOG public consultation: On 15 July, in a response to the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas’ public consultation (ENTSOG), ACER, the European Union Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators, called for the use of ‘more realistic levels of infrastructure’ in gas and hydrogen network development projects.

European Commission: Euractiv reports that Spanish Ecological Transition Minister Teresa Ribera (PSOE/S&D) has told media that she is confident she will join the next European Commission, perhaps in the climate or energy portfolio.
