FEAD urges strong recycling industry in response to ENVI vote on EU textile strategy – RECYCLING magazine

Recycling Insight – 28 April 2023 – We welcome Parliament’s opinion to ensure sustainable, reusable, repairable, recyclable and safe textile products on the EU market and underline the need for a strong framework to create and develop a strong recycling industry textile waste, which is an essential component of a sustainable and circular textile strategy. However, FEAD expresses serious concerns about the restriction of recycling markets under the mantra of ‘closed-loop recycling’. Shrinking markets for recycled products lead to lower recycling rates and lower quality of recycled products. In contrast, mandatory recycled content targets for textiles are driving demand for quality recycled fiber, stimulating end markets for separately collected textiles, and triggering new investment to scale up textile recycling.
