Waste Management: combining the circular economy with the zero-pollution ambition

Tuesday, 1st June 2021 | 14:00 – 16:00 CET

A registered EU Green Week 2021 Partner Event

With this event, FEAD provided room for discussions on how waste management contributes to abate pollution and the problems the sector is facing. The event illustrated:

  • how the waste management sector provides sustainable solutions towards a zero-pollution ambition
  • how appropriate regulatory tools can foster the transition to more sustainable value chains and end-of-life treatment
  • how we can combine circular economy (more recycling) with fighting pollution (re-injecting pollutants in the environment)

In this direction, we need consistency between recycling targets and rules related to thresholds for chemical substances, as well as specific rules related to waste (with regard to CLP, REACH). In particular, rules for chemical substances in recyclates should not be more stringent than the ones concerning products. Undoubtedly, any discussion about phasing out substances of very high concern (SVHCs) in manufacturing processes necessarily involves eco-design rules, while the success of a zero-pollution ambition requires better selective collection of waste, investing in de-pollution equipment, and promoting closed-loop systems.

With the kind participation of:

  • Mr Peter KURTH, President of FEAD
  • Mr  Luis CARRETERO SÁNCHEZ, Legal officer – REACH registration, international files, and circular economy, European Commission DG Environment, Sustainable Chemicals Unit
