Brussels was buzzing this week, and not just because of the pollen. While Green Week took centre stage, MEPs in the ITRE Committee stayed busy too, adopting a draft motion for a resolution on the Clean Industrial Deal. 


Clean Industrial Deal: On 3 June, MEPs in the ITRE Committee adopted a draft motion for resolution on the Clean Industrial Deal. 

Waste Framework Directive: On 04 June, FEAD, in cooperation with EuRIC, RREUSE, MWE, European Environmental Bureau, Zero Waste Europe, ECOS, and the T2T Alliance, published a joint letter addressed to MEPs, urging them to bring the vote forward before the summer break. 

Single Market Strategy: On 25 June, a public hearing for the Single Market Strategy will take place in the European Parliament. 

International carbon credits and EU climate targets – At a glance: The European Parliament’s Think Tank has published a ‘At a glance’ document on the International carbon credits. 

Updating the EU’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement– At a glance: The European Parliament’s Think Tank has published a ‘At a glance’ document on 5 June on the NDCs.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) – Eunomia report: On 3 June, the association ECommerce published a study carried by Eunomia on the EPR in PPWR, batteries and WEEE. 

Critical Raw Materials – Commission strategic projects: On 4 June, the European Commission published a list of 13 strategic projects outside the EU which concern strategic raw materials essential for electric vehicle, batteries and battery storage, like lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite.

Emissions Trading systems – European Commission Communication: On 4 June, the European Commission published a Communication on the total number of allowances in circulation in 2024 for the purposes of the Market Stability Reserve under the EU Emissions Trading System. 

Taxonomy – Omnibus Delegated Act: Thirty industrial lobbies (including Cefic, BusinessEurope, Digital Europe, Eurocommerce, Eurométaux and WindEurope) are urging the Commission to relax the provision paragraph f) bis of Appendix C of the taxonomy in a joint letter published on 3 June. 

Implementation of the Directive on Protection of Environment through Criminal Law: On 4 June, the Committee on Legal Affairs, with the support of the Directorate for Relations with National Parliaments (DG PART), organised an Interparliamentary Committee Meeting (ICM) on ‘Implementation of the Directive on the Protection of the Environment through Criminal Law’. 

European Water Resilience Strategy: On 3 June, the European Commission published the European Water Resilience Strategy. 

European Water Resilience Strategy – reactions:EurEau association and the Living Rivers coalition (composed of the WWF, the EEB, the European Rivers Network and more) stated in press releases that the Water Resilience Strategy is missing necessary targets.  

REACH revision: On 26 May, 20 scientists sent a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, Commission President, and Commissioners Stéphane Séjourné and Jessika Roswall on the revision of REACH. 

PFAS – letter: On 03 June, doctors, nurses, people working in the healthcare sector, and experts on PFAS sent a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, Commission President, and Commissioners Stéphane Séjourné and Jessika Roswall, to express their concern about the impacts of PFAS exposure on the health of EU citizens and to support the universal PFAS restriction.

Micro4Biogas: On 28 May, after four years of research, the EU-funded Micro4Biogas project concluded with a meeting in Aras de los Olmos (Valencia, Spain), publishing a press release and sharing advancements in microbial biotechnology and anaerobic digestion. 

Climate-ADAPT Platform: On 23 May, the European Climate Adaptation Platform Climate-ADAPT was made live. It is a partnership between the European Commission and the European Environment Agency (EEA).

RREUSE, ECOS and EEB’s stance on derogations to the apparel and footwear destruction ban: On 3 June, RREUSE, together with ECOS and the EEB, published a joint position paper on the European Commission’s proposal to ban the destruction of unsold apparel and footwear. 

Fast fashion – BEUC complaint against Shein: On 5 June, BEUC, with 25 members from 21 countries, filed a complaint with the European Commission and European consumer protection authorities against SHEIN for its use of deceptive techniques.

The EU’s climate action strategy – Briefing: On 28 May, the European Parliament’s Think Tank published a briefing on the EU’s climate action strategy. 

The 28th Regime: a new legal framework for innovative companies: On 5 June, the Committee on Legal Affairs organised a workshop, titled: The 28th Regime: a new legal framework for innovative companies.

Energy Taxation Directive (ETD): On 4 June, during the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs Ordinary meeting, MEPs resumed their debated on the draft report (dated 5 May) on the ETD.
