The recycling sector is sounding the alarm! Last week, FEAD, in cooperation with EuRIC, sent a joint open letter to the EU27 Deputy Ambassadors, calling for urgent action to save Europe’s plastics recycling and post-consumer textiles industries. 


Omnibus IV – Proposal for a Regulation: On 21 May, the European Commission published a proposal for a Directive and a Regulation on the extension of certain mitigating measures available for small and medium sized enterprises to small mid-cap enterprises and further simplifying measures. 

Omnibus package – Ombudswoman: On 23 May, the European Ombudswoman announced that she is opening an inquiry on how the Commission prepared a legislative proposal as part of its omnibus package of simplification measures. 

Sustainability Reporting Standards – EFRAG call for tenders: On 26 May, EFRAG announced that as part of the European Commission’s simplification mandate, EFRAG is seeking a contractor to deliver a robust cost and benefit analysis of the revised European Sustainability Reporting Standards. 

Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA): On 23 May, the EU executive published an implementing act (draft) under the 2024 Net-Zero Industry Act
The Annex to this Implementing act features the list of specific products and components which it deems are primarily used for the production of net-zero technologies. 

Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) – Commission Communication: On 23 May, the European Commission published a Communication providing updated information to determine the shares of the European Union supply of final net-zero technology products and their main specific components originating in different third countries.

Renewable Energy Directive (RED) – Commission Guidance: On 27 May, the European Commission published a guidance document on the targets for the consumption of renewable fuels of non-biological origin in the industry and transport sectors. 

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM): During the 27 May General Affairs Council, Ministers approved the Council’s draft agreement on the simplification of the CBAM. 

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) – EU response to Russia: On 26 May, the World Trade Organisation published the response of the EU to Russia’s request to hold consultations on the CBAM. 

Single Market Strategy – CEN and CENELEC: On 21 May, CEN and CENELEC published a press release on the Single Market Strategy. 

Shein – European Commission: On 26 May, the European Commission announced that following an investigation, the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Network of national consumer authorities and the European Commission notified the online marketplace and e-retailer Shein of the practices on its platform that go against EU consumer law. 

2040 EU target – Joint open letter by companies: On 27 May, 34 companies published a joint open letter asking for the European Union to adopt a net GHG emissions reduction target of at least 90%. The signatories include Google, IKEA, H&M, Schneider Electric, ECOSIA and more.

National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs): The European Commission’s assessment of Member States NECPs was published on 28 May. 

COP30: On 20 May, the European Parliament published its draft motion for a resolution ahead of the 30th UN Climate conference, which will take place in Brazil from 10 to 21 November. 

Trifluoroacetic acid: On 26 May, ECHA opened a consultation about the CLP classification and labelling of trifluoroacetic acid. The consultation will be opened until the 25 July.

FEAD news: On 28 May, ahead of the June environment council, FEAD published a joint open letter with EuRIC on the crisis taking place in Europe’s plastics recycling sector.
