Last week, significant decisions were made at the EU level! EU leaders have chosen candidates for the top EU jobs, the conclusions of the European Council meeting have been published, and the draft agenda for upcoming Council meetings has been released.
At FEAD, we sent out the save the date for our October event in collaboration with CAObH, visited the Guilliams Green Power Group biogas production plant near Brussels, participated in the JRC plastic EoW workshop, and held the second part of Committee 3.
EU top jobs: On 27 June, EU national leaders reached an agreement on their picks for EU top jobs. They chose Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as President of the Commission, Portugal’s former Prime Minister António Costa as the President of the European Council, and Estonia’s current Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as the EU’s foreign policy service chief. European Council meeting (conclusions): The European Council meeting took place on 28 June during which conclusions were adopted. Draft agendas for Council meetings (Hungarian Presidency): The Hungarian Presidency has published its draft agenda for Council meetings for the upcoming months. Classification, Labelling of Products (CLP): On 17 June, ECHA announced that they have agreed to a new EU-wide project to check that hazardous mixtures present in products, such as air fresheners or electronic cigarettes, are classified, labelled and packaged correctly to protect consumers and children from chemical hazards. Hydrogen Core Network (HCN): On 21 June, the European Commission approved a three billion euros scheme to support the establishment of a German ‘Hydrogen core network’. Hydrogen Europe Position Paper: Hydrogen Europe has published a position paper in which it calls for clarification on the rules on imported hydrogen. Emissions Trading System – Poland (ETS): On 27 June, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałêcz, the Polish Minister of Development Funds and Regional Policy, stated on X that question about the ETS2 must be raised at the next European summit. Industrial Emissions Directive – clarification by the Court of Justice of the EU: The Court of Justice of the EU clarified the interpretation of the 2010 directive on industrial emissions in a judgement delivered on 25 June at the request of the court in Milan. Electricity Market Design: On 26 June, the revision of the Regulation and Directive that constitute the reform of the electricity market design were published in the Official Journal of the European Union. They will enter into force on 16 July. European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC) evaluation: On 27 June, the ESABCC, which is a group of experts set up by the European climate law, published an evaluation of the long-term energy infrastructure planning and development scenarios prepared by ENTSO-E and ENTSOG. Security of the supply of gas in the EU – report by European Court of Auditors: The European Court of Auditors says in a report published on 24 June that the security of supply of gas in the EU is incomplete and that its effectiveness remains to be demonstrated. The European Commission published a response to the European Court of Auditors’ report. Key air pollutant emissions report: The European Environment Agency has published a briefing on key air pollutant emissions. It describes progress made by the EU and its Member States towards reducing emissions of the five main air pollutants regulated under the National Emission Reduction Commitments Directive. NGOs reactions to Strategic Agenda: On 25 June, NGOs published a letter addressed to European politicians in which they state that ‘we must abandon the program of an ‘industrial deal’. European Commission – France: On 27 June, Emmanuel Macron announced his approval of a second term as European Commissioner for Thierry Breton reports French media Le Monde. European Parliament – S&D: On 26 June, the Social Democrats political group elected ten people to be their Vice-Presidents: Ana Catarina Mendes, Alex Agius Saliba, Mohammed Chahim, Christophe Clergeau, Helene Frtizon, Gaby Bischoff, Joannis Maniatis, Eero Heinaluoma, Kathleen Van Brempt. On 25 June, Iratxe García Pérez was re-elected as S&D President. European Parliament – Greens/EFA: On 25 June, the Greens/EFA elected their Vice-Presidents which include Kira Marie P., Alice Bah Kuhnke, Marie Toussaint, Virginijus Sinkevičius, Ignazio Marino and Sergey Lagodinsky. A week earlier, the group elected its two co-chairs, Terry Reintke from Germany and Bas Eickhout from the Netherlands. Contexte reports that while most people expect Virginijus Sinkevičius to sit on the ENVI Committee, sources have let them know that the MEP has expressed ambitions to sit on the ITRE Committee.
