Commission finally publishes Industrial Accelerator Act: On 4 March, the European Commission presented the Industrial Accelerator Act, introducing measures to strengthen EU manufacturing capacity and decarbonisation in strategic sectors. 

EU officially sets 2040 climate target: On 5 March, EU ministers formally endorsed the agreement with the European Parliament establishing the EU’s 2040 climate target.

Commission consults on ‘do no significant harm’ rules for next EU budget: On 4 March, the European Commission launched a consultation on how to apply the ‘do no significant harm’ principle under the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework. 

ECHA committee finalises risk assessment for universal PFAS restriction: On 3 March, the European Chemicals Agency announced that its Risk Assessment Committee adopted its opinion on the proposed restriction of PFAS substances, according to the ECHA announcement

Parliament’s environment committee MFF compromise amendments: On 5 March, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee adopted compromise amendments for the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework.

Industry groups defend stability of EU emissions trading system: On 4 March, seven industry associations issued a joint statement calling on the EU to maintain the integrity of the emissions trading system. 

UNODC report highlights scale of global illegal waste trafficking: In February 2026, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) published its Global Analysis on Crimes that Affect the Environment highlighting that illegal waste trafficking has become a multi-billion-euro global industry.
